چکیده

BACKGROUND The epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is also involved in cancer progression and metastasis. The expression of mesenchymal marker genes might be associated with a more aggressive form of the disease. CD146 is a marker of mesenchymal cells, a potentially metastasis-promoting cell adhesion molecule, and its expression has been described in various types of solid tumors. We, herein, evaluated the expression of CD146 in patients with adenocarcinoma of the lung by using immunohistochemistry to clarify its clinical significance. MATERIALS AND METHODS Tumor specimens were collected from 183 consecutive patients who underwent complete resection for lung adenocarcinoma from 2003 to 2007 in our Department. We analyzed the CD146 expression levels in the primary lung adenocarcinoma by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS Positive expression of CD146 was identified in 16 (8.7%) patients. A significant association was only observed between the CD146 expression level and male patient gender (p=0.03); other factors were not associated with CD146 expression. The 5-year overall survival (OS) rate in patients with tumors that were negative and positive for CD146 expression was 84.4% and 50.0%, respectively (p<0.01). A positive CD146 expression was found to be associated with the OS based on a univariate survival analysis (p=0.013). CONCLUSION CD146 expression was more frequently detected in males than in females. The positive expression of CD146 was associated with a poorer OS according to the survival analysis. CD146 may be a useful marker for predicting poor prognosis in patients with NSCLC following complete resection.

5-Year Survival in Gastric Adenocarcinoma with Epithelial and Stromal Versican Expression

Background & Objective: Gastric cancer is the second most frequent cause of cancer death worldwide, despite differences in incidence around the world. The majority of gastric cancer cases concern gastric adenocarcinoma, which has a fairly high 5-year survival rate when coupled with early-stage diagnosis. Versican, a member of the aggregating chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans fa...

Role of Frizzled receptor expression on patients’ survival with gastrointestinal cancers: A systematic review with meta-analysis

Background: Frizzled receptors (FZD) play a pivotal role in the initiation and progression of a wide array of cancers. Dysregulated expression of FZD receptors is correlated with higher metastasis and invasive potential, as well as short survival in many malignancies. In this meta-analysis, we aimed to verify the prognostic value of FZD receptor expression on patients’ survival with different t...

Expression of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor and the association with Demographic and Prognostic Factors in Patients with Non-small Cell Lung Cancer

Introduction: Growth, proliferation, survival, and differentiation are the prominent characteristics of cells, which are affected by cancer. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) plays a pivotal role in the effective control of these features. Given the significance of EGFR signaling pathway in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), EGFR expression is influential on these cell characteristics. I...

Evaluation of PRR11 gene expression changes and its relationship with tumor size in patients with gastric adenocarcinoma

Introduction: Gastric cancer is one of the most common gastrointestinal tract neoplasms. Because of its invasion, and nonspecific symptoms and signs, the disease is often diagnosed at an advanced stage with short survival. PRR11 participates in the initiation and progression of lung cancer and breast cancer by regulating important genes involved in cell cycles and tumorigenesis. In this researc...

Expression of Tiam1 predicts lymph node metastasis and poor survival of lung adenocarcinoma patients

BACKGROUND To assess the value of Tiam1 in predicting lymph node metastasis and survival after curative resection in patients with lung adenocarcinoma. METHODS Immunohistochemical staining for Tiam1 was performed on 98 adenocarcinoma and 30 normal lung tissues. The association of Tiam1 protein expression with the clinicopathological characteristics and the prognosis of lung adenocarcinoma wer...
